About Piwa
Two ideas becoming one — village wisdom meets modern technology.
Our Story
Piwa was born from two ideas becoming one. The Village Development Model — a vision of villages organizing as families to feed and develop themselves. And a technology platform that could provide the water, data, and market access to make that vision real.
Uganda sits on some of the most fertile land in Africa, bordered by the world's largest tropical lake. Yet 95% of its agriculture depends on increasingly unreliable rainfall. Smallholder farmers — who produce 80% of the country's food — are trapped in a cycle of low yields, market uncertainty, and vulnerability to climate shocks.
The VDM showed us that the solution starts not with technology, but with community. When villages organize as families — feeding their children first, working together, developing collectively — they create the social foundation for everything that follows.
Piwa provides the technology layer: solar-powered irrigation, mechanization, smart sensors, and guaranteed markets. But the village leads. The community governs. The technology serves.
The Village Development Model
The VDM — “Village as a Family” — is a philosophy that predates and grounds Piwa's technology approach. It is the founder's vision: that African villages already possess the social structures needed for collective development. They just need the right tools.
In the VDM, a village operates like a family. Parents feed children before selling at market. Siblings work together on shared tasks. The family develops as one — no child left behind. Applied to a village: food security comes first. Labor is pooled. Commercial income is shared. Development benefits everyone.
This is not a new idea imported from outside. It is rooted in the communal traditions that have sustained East African communities for generations. Piwa simply provides the modern infrastructure — water, mechanization, markets, data — to make it economically powerful.
Our Mission
To empower villages to develop themselves — using irrigation, mechanization, data, and market access as the tools for community-led agricultural transformation across Uganda's lake corridors.
Our Values
Farmer First
Every decision starts with the question: does this make life better for the farming family?
Feed Before You Develop
Food security is non-negotiable. No commercial crop is planted until every family can eat for the year.
Transparency
Open books, open data, open processes. Farmers and investors see exactly where every shilling goes.
Technology for Good
We use technology to solve real problems — not for its own sake. If a simple solution works, we use it.
Our Team

The Uganda Opportunity
Uganda has abundant water, fertile soil, and a young, growing population. The missing pieces are infrastructure and organization. The VDM provides the social organization. Piwa provides the technology infrastructure. Together, they unlock Uganda's agricultural potential.
